Hello lovely people, and happy Sunday.
Most of us think about AI. Even if you live under a rock, that rock may soon be controlled by AI, so you should probably think about it.
We thought the 20th centure was a steep curve in terms of human progress––if the 1st-20th centuries were like a hockey stick, the 21st century is like a pole vaulting stick, it’s just straight up… (okay sorry idk what other sports equipment is like a hockey stick but more extreme)
As the AI arms race continues, and humans are needed for less and less, what remains for us?
🌈✨Imagination ✨🌈
No but really, we’re gonna have to do a lot more of what we weren’t supposed to do in school: daydreaming.
AI is creative, hardworking, efficient, and articulate; anything that we can do, AI will be able to do. Honestly, AI will probably get better than us at imagination. But at least for now, imagination seems to be the last frontier for humans.
AI will take over all the implementation, communication, and general operations, so humans will be left to think of ideas.
How do we think of ideas? It’s one of those things where the harder you try, the more it escapes you.
The best time to come up with ideas is when you’re bored. When you’re not thinking of anything in particular or doing anything in particular, that’s when the best ideas come to roost in your mind.
The good news is that so few people allow themselves to be bored nowadays – with devices providing all the dopamine we could ever want – that the competition in the “imagination” category is not that high.
Having a well-oiled imagination, while discouraged in the school system, may be our #1 asset in an AI-driven future.
To work out our imaginations, we simply have to be more comfortable being bored. Try not listening to music or podcasts while doing chores, working out, or driving. It’s scary but it’s not as bad as you think.
We have to spend more time in the clouds, imagining, and less time executing in the trenches.
Let’s just say ideas are like little invisible sprites co-habitating the world with us. When you scroll, you’re telling the ideas “I’m busy right now. DND” But when you meditate, or stay in the present moment experiencing whatever you’re doing, you tell the sprites, “I’m open, stop by for a chat.”
You don’t have to follow every idea you get –– most of them will be bad –– but every once in a while there will be a Eureka moment like “Create Microsoft” or “Tell your Grandma you love her” in there that you don’t want to miss.
What’s one small way you can let your mind wander today?
Let’s enjoy today while AI still lets us!
Update: I now only make chalices. Only chalice + plate sets, that’s it. I’m one person and I’m gonna make one thing: chalice plate sets for communion and kiddush. I love how communion sets and kiddush sets are the same thing! So versatile! So Jews and Christians can use them, and whoever needs a nice chalice set for occasions/gifts. Also, ironically I left my headphones at work so I will be headphone-less at the gym tomorrow morning. Forced to practice what I preach
All the best,
Liliana
